This romanticized view of teacher/student relationship belies the reality. The typical teacher/student relationship is mutually respectful but fundamentally transactional. After the primary school period, students work under the supervision of a variety of ever-changing instructors, each of whom has to attend to the needs of at least 100 students. The sort of meaningful mentor/mentee celebrated in the movies is the rare exception, not the rule.
