Now, I could recommend a couple of other novels. Try Zamiatin's _We_, a 1920s Soviet science fiction future dystopia. Beautiful, strange, scary.

Or Grossman's _Life and Fate_. Much longer, a story of family around the battle of Stalingrad. Astonishing novel.
